Opt Out of Credit Card Offers

This morning I was looking at what felt like the millionth “You’re Pre-Approved!” credit card offer sent to Bryan in the last week.

Then I remembered: last year I opted out.

There’s an official program run by the three major credit bureaus — Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion — that lets you stop prescreened credit and insurance offers.

You can:

  • Opt out for 5 years (quick and done online), or
  • Permanently opt out (requires printing, signing, and mailing a confirmation form).

I chose the permanent option last year. It worked. I haven’t received a single credit card offer in months.

This is especially helpful given:

  • Mail theft in San Jose
  • Identity theft risk from discarded “pre-approved” offers
  • Sheer paper waste

It’s done per person (not per household), so I just filled it out for Bryan as well.

Takes a few minutes. Worth it.
