Spring Time Hike

Looking for a stunning spring hike? Máyyan ‘Ooyákma – Coyote Ridge Open Space Preserve is an absolute must-see, especially the Bay Checkerspot trail.

The Hike

Bryan and I hiked the entire trail (about 5.4 miles) counter clockwise (steepest climb first, about 1000 feet).  But the best part, which was absolutely stunning, was the Bay Checkerspot trail. The 1.5 miles south of the parking lot is the best part.

The trail has multiple shaded rest stops like this one.  It allows someone to take a short break to take in the views and maybe eat a snack.

Ecological Highlights

The California buttercups are gorgeous right now.

Of course you get many views of our springtime California poppies.

The preserve has this serpentine soil that is necessary for the native Bay Checkerspot butterfly.  It is only found in Santa Clara and San Bruno counties.

This unusual, rocky soil is chemically harsh, meaning only a few specialized native plants can grow here, including the essential host plant for the butterfly which is why the flowers and butterfly habitat are so special!

The orange patches visible on some rocks in these areas aren’t rust—they’re lichens growing on exposed rock surfaces, a common sight on serpentine outcrops in the South Bay hills.

Along the path, keep an eye out for metal sculptures that blend incredibly well with their environment.

The Bay Checkerspot Trail is the most scenic, with views of the Coyote Ridge Canyon and the valley.

I finally got a chance to catch a quiet Bay Checkerspot butterfly for a photo!

Visitor Tips

The best time of year to visit is from now (early March) until May.  Before you head out, make sure to download the free Butterfly Pass.  They do check!  They will give you a lanyard with the pass that you can keep for future visits.  During the busy season, you also have to book for weekend visits.

Also, wear sunscreen and a hat, there is no shade on this hike!   Bring water if you go on the 5.4 mile hike.  There is a restroom at the parking lot.

Ready for a spectacular spring outing? Don’t forget to download your free Butterfly Pass and book your weekend slot.  You won’t regret the views!

  4. Just a word of warning: The preserve is open only Wednesday thru Sunday and even then not until 10 AM. Time may change in May, but best to check the website. Great photos! The yellow flowers are Goldfields.
