Naglee Park Open Studios

Frances Schwab conceived the idea of a neighborhood open studios tour while walking Naglee Park and noticing the many artist’s homes in our neighborhood. The free event’s goals are to:

  • Display and sell local art
  • Encourage a sense of community
  • Promote our artist friendly Naglee Park neighborhood

Arnaud Bergerol Marcelle Bergerol, my grandmother, was a French painter who brought to the canvas exceptional images of French country and city life during the 1920s – 1950s. During her lifetime, she painted over 400 paintings, and many of the best of these will be offered at the 2022 Naglee Park Open Studios.

Audrey Rust Using vibrant complementary color and mixed media, Audrey paints on canvas, fabric and creates rich collages.

Candy Coleman Candy creates three-dimensional cards, that change a floral design into an inviting floral arrangement.

Catherine Marlatt Catherine makes unique quilted items in beautiful cotton prints, including baby quilts, table runners, mug rugs, and knitted scrubbers

Charles Hawes [exhibited by Sue Burnham] Charles Hawes, known as Bud by his friends, was born in Huntington, W.VA in 1909. Throughout his life Buds great loves were
art and people. These loves are palpably visible in all of his work. His work during his first career (32 years as a nationally recognized illustrator) focused on magazines, newspapers, advertising agencies, cartoons and children’s books. During this time he became a member of both the National Society of Illustrators and the American Watercolor Society. In 1964 Bud visited St. John in the U.S.V.I. and fell in love with the West Indies and her people. In 1965 he moved to St. Croix, U.S.V.I. where he began his prolific second career, that of a watercolor artist. Bud spent the next 28 years capturing his deep love
for these islands and their people through his dynamic watercolors.
He often described his style of painting as being loose,
impressionistic and realistic. He used a technique called forcing color to capture the ever-moving vibrancy of the West Indies, making many of his watercolors seem alive. Most of these paintings now hang throughout the world in the homes and offices of patrons who also shared that same love.

Cotton Stevenson Creating thematic ceramics, Cotton will exhibit lively mixed media and ceramic art, which are, at times, whimsical and humorous.

Dane Summerell Dane Summer is a painter and printmaker who will exhibit his blackand white wood block prints.

Debi Quick Debi sculpts glass and metal pieces into recycled bike wheels. These multimedia works create a kaleidoscope effect, repurposing ordinary things into winsome sculpture.

Deborah Anderson Debbie creates imaginative, handcrafted polymer clay jewelry and leather accessories. Her designs and color schemes are sophisticated and playful at the same time.

Denice LeBourveau Denice makes original cards and inventive scrapbooks in various color schemes for every occasion.

Dianne Smith Dianne knits hats, scarves, pillows, blankets in various yarns and brilliant colors, creating texture and softness with yarns.

Gary Hartnett Gary sculpts animated wooden toys, wooden boxes, wooden jewel boxes, and creates sculptures of mixed kinds of wood. His technique is precise and the pieces are beautifully finished.

Jessica Jones Jessica paints intensely colored pieces, with bright watercolors: faces, bodies, houses.

Julie Engelbrecht Julie designs and sews costumes and unusual clothing, including making original hats and jewelry. She also repurposes brilliant fabrics into collages.

Kristi Conley Kristi handcrafts dollhouses, even making miniature books and furniture for them. She also uses vivid color to make book sculptures.

Laurel Wong Laurel crafts small glass vessels in rich colors, spinning tops, and suncatchers, as well as unique ornaments.

Linda Dittes I will be exhibiting my plein air oil paintings, such as this lavender field, painted on location. I will also display my fabric pumpkin creations.

Lisa Chock I make decorative bowls, cozies, wine totes, and charming Christmas decorations.

Margaret Washington Margaret paints realistic landscapes, portraits and still life subjects in transparent watercolor. Her colors and rich detail create atmospheric moods as well as convey the realist subjects.

Margaux Chock Margaux will be showing oil Paintings, watercolors, and cyanotypes.

Marni Kamzan Wheel thrown pottery made by Marni Joy Kamzan Designs. Ms. Kamzan was a production potter in Santa Cruz for over 20 years. Her work was sold in hundreds of galleries and craft shops across the country before she retired from the craft. Over her career as a potter,
Ms. Kamzan also exhibited her work at local crafts shows, including the American Crafts Council show at Fort Mason, Tapestry in Talent, Palo Alto Celebrates the Arts, and the Harvest Festival. She was a member of the Association of Clay and Glass Artists of California. She will be showing and selling work that she made over her career, as well as work that she has collected from other professional potters around the world.

River Brown River writes and illustrates with watercolor or oils. She also makes collages on simple themes from cut up William Morris calendars, which look great in old frames and Craftsman settings. She made a series of small watercolor drawings of NP neighbors, turning them into rabbits. River loves to collaborate with a client, agreeing on a concept she designs and executes the work.

Sabra Briere Working in oil pastels, Sabra creates rich, realistic landscapes, textured and photographic portraits of animals, as well as floral

Sharon Hartnett Sharon crafts handmade rings, bracelets; necklaces. She selects combinations of gemstones, pearls, leather, and metals, some precious metals. Her original designs include casual, simple and dressy, high-style pieces.

Susan Azar Susan is a photographer of Nature and especially flowers. In addition to her photographs, she will be showing Live Plants Arrangements.

Tanya Burkey Tanya will be mainly showing garden art: her whimsical ceramic butterflies or flowers. She will also offer some functional pieces of her pottery art.

Ted Fullwood Ted works in a variety of media including clay, mosaic, and fiber. His dynamic sculptural forms exhibit rich color pallets, subtle variations, and complex textures. He will be displaying clay sculptures as well as some clay containers in this show.

Trish Nishikawa Stunning floral sculptures made with recycled materials found within Naglee Park. Explore the possibilities of different materials to create sustainable and artful floral designs during Trish’s 2 hour design demonstration show the day before, on Saturday October 8th. Visit
www.projectfleur.com for more details.

Willa Willa will be offering large-scale figurative metal sculptures for outside or indoors. Her works range from imaginative objects made of repurposed materials, evocative prints and drawings to sculpture.

For our 13th annual Naglee Park Open Studios in 2021, because we must stand together, alone, instead of visiting artists in studio locations throughout Naglee Park, Naglee Park Open Studios went virtual again. This page lists a link for each participating artist. Visit their sites now to learn more about them or check out our Facebook page, where we posted an artist a day from May 29 to June 6, the day before Open Studios. However you find out about them and their work, buy some local art and support our artists this year, when support is needed by all!

Charles (Bud) Hawes was my stepfather. He often described his style of painting as being loose, impressionistic and realistic. He used a technique called ‘forcing color’ to capture the ever-moving vibrancy of life in the West Indes, making many of his water colors seem alive.

Metaphysical maps: The geographical distance between you and I is wide. I have hope that you will find a sanity in the search, and joy in the harmony of everyday life. Our experiences are rooted and discovered through our perceptions of the spiritual world, the physical world, and the metaphysical dimension. There is a vibrancy that is created when the boundaries we have built through our symbols, languages, and customs, become wild and transform into a joyful human experience. Through the most essential and obvious forms of expression of humanity we can discover parts of ourselves that are usually hidden in everyday life but arise when faced with transformation, judgment, and identity. It is about discovering the self, in terms of the mind, the heart, the body, and the soul, as well as discovering one’s country and ethnicity as an integrated part of our identity. I use maps as a way of communication with the unseen and uncharted land forms of human experience, and to understand the intuitive nature of everyday life. It is that which roots one person to another, one country to its neighbor, and one thought to one thought.

Ray Kirk was born in Butte Montana in 1960. He has lived in Butte, Libby and Whitehall Montana, as well as Rock Springs and Gillette Wyoming, Boise Idaho, Antioch, Eureka, Modesto and now San Jose California. He has extensively traveled the western United States and visited many of our reservations along the way. He started drawing in Butte when he was 11 or 12 years of age. He has had a fascination for his Native American heritage from a very young age. His grandmother who was of Chippewa descent had a great influence on him. She taught him beading, drawing and painting. Since she passed away, he has concentrated on drawing Native Americans and adding a little of her spirit into every one he draws. Roy decided to put his artistic skills to work creating Graphic Designs for people. He has a degree in Graphic Design. He is able to add a unique style to your graphic design needs.
